Many of you may recognize the famous Western Wall Prayer Plaza in Jerusalem. This is the holiest site in the world for Jews. The Jewish Temple once stood on the Temple Mount platform above, likely where the Islamic Dome of the Rock is today (the structure with the gold dome).
For several reasons, most Jews do not go up on the Temple Mount. Therefore, the Western Wall below is thought to be the closest one can get to where the Holy of Holies once stood.
When praying at the wall, one tradition is to write out prayer requests on a slip of paper and place them between the cracks in the Wall.
Although it may sound like superstition, the practice of bringing written prayers to the location of the Lord's House is biblical.
2 Kings 19:14-15 Then Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD. Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said, "LORD, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth."
If you don't know the end of the story, God answered Hezekiah's prayer in a BIG way!
I would be honored to humbly bring your petitions before the Lord in this manner when I have the opportunity to pray at the Western Wall.
